Is technology an engine of progress or a force of polarization?
Technology is around us everywhere and we have become so used to technology that we can hardly imagine a world without the technology we live with daily. The rise of technology has created wealth, seamless solutions and made our everyday lives easier. The development of artificial intelligence is fully underway and raises major questions about the role of humans in a technological world.
Is the development of smart technology only positive? Is technology for everyone or only reserved for some? In this panel discussion, we will go into further detail about effects from technology that have the opposite effect of economic growth and simple everyday life. Therefore, in this panel discussion, we will discuss polarizing effects technology can have, and how we can counteract these.
Among other things, we will go into more detail on: Technology and gender differences, Algorithmic bias, Technology and economic inequality, Technology and working conditions. Why are we not critical of technology, have we become dependent on it?
To discuss this, we have invited leading researchers and technology leaders.
Silvija Seres is a mathematician and technology investor. Her background is from algorithmic research at Oxford. Seres was rewarded the “ODA” prize in 2019 for being Norway's most influential woman working in IT.
Keith Downing is a professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. He is also an Affiliate Scholar in the Neuroscience Department of Oberlin College.
Knut H. Sørensen is professor emeritus at NTNU, Centre for Technology and Society. His academic work has focused on many areas, including user perspectives on technology, climate and energy issues, feminist technoscience, university studies, and interdisciplinarity.
Alexandra Bech Gjørv is President and CEO of SINTEF, one of Europe's largest independent applied research institutes. She has a long career in leadership and was the former head of 22nd of July committee.
