Roland Derek Black is the subject of Rising out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist by Eli Saslow, a previous Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter. It is a powerful story about a former white nationalist who renounced his beliefs and ideologies and condemned his own family. Roland Derek Black was not only a leading figure for white supremacist politics but also a product of them. Black comes from a famous white nationalist family, his father, Don Black, is the founder of Stormfront, the biggest white supremacist racist site, and his godfather is David Duke of the Ku Klux Klan. Black was previously seen as a prominent figure for the far-right movement in the USA, expected to be the inheritor of Stormfront and “the leading light” of the white supremacist movement. Growing up, he was active in spreading propaganda through media interviews and became a politician elected by the people with his daily radio show. However, through his experiences, influences, and surroundings in college, Black was able to understand that the values and environment he grew up in were wrong. College and friends, deep conversations, wine and philosophy had brought him to the belief that everyone had an equal place and should have an equal chance. Today, he is a doctoral history student researching the medieval and early modern origins of the concept of race and racist hierarchies and ideologies.

Roland Derek Black is traveling all the way from the USA to Studentersamfundet i Trondheim to talk about “Rising out of Hatred”. Join us in Storsalen on February 10th for a unique possibility to hear a former nationalist talk about his life and experiences!
